Master Academia is a friend of The PhD Place. Their site provides comprehensive information on the many facets of academia that contribute to academic success. It targets master and PhD students with the aim to support them in their academic journeys. Following a master's or PhD degree is a unique time for professional and personal development. However, all too often postgraduate students only receive supervision in terms of highly specialised content. As a consequence, they struggle to navigate the academic world with all its complexities. To fill the knowledge gap of how academia works and how to make the most of it, Master Academia publishes regular content in four categories: thesis/dissertation tips, academic skills, networking hacks and career advice.

Bolded Science is a collaborative blog for members of the scientific community. As misinformation propagates on the internet, mistrust in science and medicine is growing. More than ever, there is a call for scientists to participate in public communications and advocacy.

Bolded Science has two goals:
1) Provide a platform for scientists to communicate their stories and ideas on social media.
2) Enable scientists to gain experience with informal, public writing.

You can find them on Twitter and LinkedIn.

EThOS is the UK’s national thesis service which aims to maximise the visibility and availability of the UK’s doctoral research theses. It demonstrates the quality of UK research, and supports the UK Government’s open access principle that publications resulting from publicly-funded research should be made freely available for all researchers, providing opportunities for further research.

There are approximately 600,000 records relating to theses awarded by over 120 institutions. Around 400,000 of these also provide access to the full text thesis, either via download from the EThOS database or via links to the institution’s own repository. Records are held for all UK PhD-awarding institutions, but we do not (yet) hold all records for all institutions. Every month around 3000 new records are added and an additional 2000 full text theses become accessible.

The MRC DiMeN Doctoral Training Partnership provides up to 40 fully-funded studentships per year and delivers training for the next generation of biomedical researchers.

Utilising the combined expertise of five world-leading institutions, the Discovery Medicine North (DiMeN) partnership will train the next generation of researchers to tackle the major health problems facing the population.

The partner institutions (Universities of Leeds, Liverpool, Newcastle, Sheffield and York) are core members of the Northern Health Sciences Alliance, which confronts stark North-South disparities in the rates of chronic disease, poor health and early death in a population of >15 million.

We are doing so by organising all kinds of online and in-person (when possible) social, health & fitness, arts & culture and academic development events. The aims of the PhD Social and Support Network (SSN) are:
  • To provide a space and support activities for the Loughborough Doctoral Researcher community
  • To remain a partial between the Doctoral College and the Students’ Union and to hold each accountable for the welfare of the Loughborough Doctoral Researcher community
  • To improve the experience of the Doctoral Researcher community at Loughborough University
