What is it?

The PhD Space is a student-led writing group and support network. We meet online multiple times a week. For the first twenty minutes we check-in and chat. Then we spend the rest of the time writing (with breaks). Our aim is to help boost productivity and help each other with our writing. Attendance is free.

Who can attend?

Anyone with an institutional email! Any year, any uni, any subject. It doesn't matter whether you're a PhD researcher or you've graduated, anyone is welcome to take part.

You do not have to be funded by the MGSDTP to take part.

Amazing morning working with everyone at @ThePhDPlace - two hours of good writing done with lots of friendly faces and encouragement.

I really recommend joining and coming along weekly (I know I’ll be there from now on)!

Great morning joining the @ThePhDPlace for writing and chatting and chicken gossip. Lovely to meet each week for a supportive writing space as a #phd student at @lborouniversity open to all doctoral researchers at Loughborough University! pic.twitter.com/4YS6xiKUtq

What can I expect?

After you fill in the form, you will be taken to a page with the writing group link. We will also send you a reminder every so often with a link to the group via email. This is when we will update you on our timetable for the weekly sessions. After you join the session, the writing group leads will welcome you. For the first twenty minutes we will check in and chat as a group, and the leader of the session will invite you to share your goals for the session. You are not required to take part in the discussion if you don't want to, and while we encourage everyone to join in, you will never be asked to turn your camera or microphone on if you'd prefer to leave them off. There is a chat function, which you are also welcome to use.

You will then be asked to move in to any of the three 'zones', depending on where you work best. These are:

Writing Space - for quiet, independent work.
Chat and work - for those don't mind a bit of chatter and discussion.
Break time - for when you need to relax.

You are welcome to move between spaces depending on how you feel. Most people use the quiet space, but some people also share advice and support in the chat area. After 40 minutes of working we will meet again in the middle as a group, where we will take a 10 minute break. This is an opportunity to stretch your legs, make a drink, and tell us about your progress! We will then work for another 40 minutes, before having a 10 minute check in and saying goodbye.

How can I join?

We are not currently running our writing groups, but we will be soon! Please keep a look out on Twitter @ThePhDPlace or on this page for future updates.
